At the time Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, Pompeii was a thriving wealthy city. Rediscovered in 1748, the excavated town offers a snapshot of Roman life in the 1st century. Excavations of the site have been ongoing for a few hundred years. In 1995, the area around Vesuvius was formed into the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio, the National Park of Vesuvius.
