The central arena of the Roman Colosseum is a 287 long and 180 ft wide oval, surrounded by a 15 ft high wall above which rose tiers of seating. A section of the arena floor, originally made with wooden planks covered with yellow sand taken from the hill of Monte Mario, was reconstructed a decade ago to give some sense of how the stadium looked.
