Built between 1887, the Galleria Umberto I was named for Umberto I, King of Italy at the time of construction. From the beginning, it combined businesses, shops, cafes and apartments in a unique public space under a magnificent glass roof. The galleria sustained significant damage and was re-built following WWII.
