The Venetian Republic, originating from the city of Venice, existed for over a thousand years, from the late 7th century until it fell to Napoleon in 1797. After the fall of the Venetian Republic to Napoleon 1797, construction of housing in Venice was suspended. The Grand Canal looks much the same as it did at that time with many grand palaces of the era undergoing restorations that have saved their 18th century appearance.
